The 10 basic rules of application

1. grease filling of the NILOS-RING

To reduce the frictional torque during initial start-up, the cranked sealing groove and sealing edge must be filled with grease before installation. The run-in NILOS-RING then no longer requires any maintenance.

2. grease chamber on the NILOS-RING AK

The space between the two sealing edges of the NILOS-RING AK should also be filled with grease before installation. Under normal operating conditions, the grease used to lubricate the tapered roller bearing can be used for this purpose. In special cases, especially if heavy water ingress is to be expected at the bearing location, the grease chamber should be filled with a water-repellent sealing grease.

3. Sealing effect

The seal is achieved by the sealing edge of the NILOS-RING resting against the inner or outer rolling bearing ring under slight pressure and grinding more or less deeply into the hardened rolling bearing ring. The resulting fine labyrinth prevents both the escape of grease and the penetration of dirt into the bearing. If there is a design option, the internally sealing NILOS-RING type should always be preferred.

4. basic rule: Concentric run

As with any sealing element, the sealing edge of the NILOS-RING must be exactly concentric. This is the only way to create the labyrinth groove required for the sealing effect. The outer sealing NILOS-RING should be mounted so that it slides easily on the shaft and the inner sealing ring should be centered in the bearing housing bore. The inner or outer edges of the clamping surface must therefore not stand on or in thread turns, thread run-outs, recesses or cavities. The radius on the shaft or housing shoulder should be ≤ 0.1.

5. non-slip clamping

The NILOS-RING must not slip at the clamping point. The tight fit of the rolling bearing on the shaft shoulder is sufficient for slip-proof clamping of the externally sealing NILOS-RING. The standard clamping elements are sufficient for the internally sealing NILOS-RING.

6. Space requirement ''h1''

The maximum dimension that can be undercut without affecting the sealing effect is given in the dimension tables as the installation height “h”. It is therefore always sufficient if the space requirement is taken into account with “h1” = h + 1 mm.

7. self-aligning bearing and barrel bearing

If these bearings are only intended for their higher load carrying capacity, NILOS-RINGS can be used. However, if these bearings perform oscillating movements ≤ 1° in accordance with their actual purpose, the NILOS-RING is unsuitable as a seal.

8. cylindrical roller bearing without rib

For these and a number of similar bearings, only NILOS-RINGS type LSTO should be used, which can accommodate the axial displacements of these bearings to a certain extent (max. 0.3 mm).

9. Tapered roller bearing

NILOS-RING types AV, JV and AK can be used to seal tapered roller bearings for the bearing sides indicated. The correct installation of both the tapered roller bearings and the associated NILOS-RINGS must be carried out with particular care so that the sealing edges of the NILOS-RINGS are not damaged.

10. connection dimensions

Apart from the smallest bearings, the NILOS-RING is suitable for all rolling bearings with roundings and shoulder heights in accordance with DIN 5418. Special versions of NILOS-RINGS can be provided for other rolling bearing makes if necessary. Connection dimensions for NILOS-RINGS type AK are specified separately in the relevant dimension tables.
